Services

EMEC Ecology's experience is wide ranging and extensive. We can offer many services some of which include:

Protected Species

Many species are protected by law at national and/or European level. The presence of such species can be a material consideration when Planning Authorities are determining applications for developments or capital works. Proper concern for these species and effective mitigation can help proposals satisfy the “sustainability agenda” and greatly increase their chance of securing consent.

The first step is to determine whether protected species are present. EMEC Ecology undertakes surveys for the following:
When protected species are found, EMEC Ecology can provide advice on the next step. Our capability includes:
  • Interpreting species protection legislation and advising on legal compliance
  • Licence applications
  • Species protection and mitigation (including site design management, construction programming and translocation)
  • Species and site monitoring

Ecological Impact Assessment

Ecological Impact Assessment is the assessment of the effect of a proposed action on plants and animals and the environments in which they occur. Increasingly, this is a prerequisite for development, either independently or as part of a wider Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

EMEC Ecology specialises in Ecological Assessment and provides:

Management Planning for Sites, Habitats and Species

Most habitats in the UK require management to maintain their ecological value. Many species also depend on management to provide a continuation of the conditions upon which they depend.

  • Plans for nature conservation; to offset development impacts; satisfy planning conditions and improve the “sustainability” of projects
  • Plans following specific formats, e.g. English Nature’s ‘Minimum Management Plan’
  • Strategies for control of invasive species
  • Habitat creation schemes

Ecological Survey, Audit & Monitoring

Survey, Audit and Monitoring provide much of EMEC Ecology’s business. Survey and Audit to establish what habitats and species occur on any site; Monitoring to establish the effects of the development and management strategies that have been undertaken.

EMEC Ecology offers a comprehensive survey, audit and monitoring service, which covers all animal and plant groups and all standard ecological methodologies. Our survey capability includes:

BREEAM / Code for Sustainable Homes – Land Use and Ecology

EMEC Ecology can undertake the ecological surveys required for the BREEAM assessment scheme and the Code for Sustainable Homes. This includes an assessment of:
  • The ecological value of the site;
  • Recommendations for protecting ecological features;
  • Mitigating ecological impact and enhancing site ecology

BREEAM Assessments
The BREEAM family of assessment methods and tools are all designed to help construction professionals understand and mitigate the environmental impacts of the developments they design and build. BREEAM provides a credible environmental label for buildings and allows developments to be recognised according to their environmental benefits.

The Code for Sustainable Homes
Implemented in May 2008, the Government confirmed a mandatory rating as a single national standard to guide industry in the design and construction of sustainable homes. The code is an environmental assessment method for new homes and has six mandatory performance levels in key areas. The code can guarantee to deliver environmental savings in specific areas like water and energy.
