Project: Demolition of a Dilapidated Bungalow in West Bridgford, Nottingham
Client: Nottingham City Council
Late 2008 - early 2009
Background
EMEC Ecology were required to carry out a protected species survey at a site where the demolition of a dilapidated bungalow was proposed.
Ecological Surveys Undertaken
EMEC Ecology carried out a protected species survey at the site. Although no evidence of bats, or features suitable for roosting bats were found, evidence of a roosting barn owl was recorded. There were no suitable nesting sites and no evidence of barn owl nesting.
Mitigation
One of the main threats facing barn owls is the loss of potential nesting sites. Therefore, in order to compensate for the loss of the roosting location, which would be lost upon demolition of the bungalow, two barn owl boxes were attached to trees within 250m of the site.
Summer 2010
Since the installation of the two barn owl boxes the Rushcliffe Barn Project has been carrying out regular checks to see if they are being used. Following a check in summer 2010 we were pleased to be informed that one of the boxes was been used by breeding barn owls, with two, soon to fledge chicks recorded. EMEC Ecology would like to express their thanks to Howard Broughton (holding the barn owls in the photograph below) and the Rushcliffe Barn Owl project for carrying out these checks.
